Porcelain stay insulators are mainly installed in the middle of stay wires and guy wires on overhead line poles. In normal operation, the porcelain stay insulator insulates the upper live part of the stay wire from the lower section connected to ground. In case the conductor or pole fails, the porcelain stay insulator ensures that the lower portion of the stay wire will not become energized, reducing the risk of electric shock accidents.

The stay insulator body has two holes, through which two guy grips pass in opposite directions. The guy grips wrap around the stay wire to create the connection.
