All of us know what a bolt is. These are parts for fixing two or more materials. There are all kinds of fasteners or bolts today. Different types of bolts have their own set of characteristics, advantages, and application areas. One such widely used bolt is the carriage bolt. These bolts are also called coach bolts. Like other bolts, bracket bolts can be of various types.

One. What is Carriage Bolt?

Sometimes, application-specific bolts are required. These bolts are suitable for wood products, wood-based materials, and woodworking applications. These applications have specially designed bolt types called slider bolts. In the early 19th century, these bolts were used to make carriages and their wheels. This is where they got their name. These bolts come in various styles and head and neck shapes.

The following are some of the most commonly used carriage bolts, their properties, and application areas:

1. Roundhead, ribbed neck: These bracket bolts are made of low carbon steel. These types of body bolts have serrated or ribbed shoulders and have round heads. They are mainly used for soft and ductile metals, plastics, and wood.

2. Roundhead, short neck: These bolts have a round head and a short, square shoulder. They have a uniform pitch and are usually made of low carbon steel or medium carbon steel. The short necks of these bolts make them suitable for use with metal plates, as standard sized necks create obstacles.

3. Flathead, square neck: As the name implies, they have a flat head and have a lower profile on the top or front side of the fastener compared with round head bolts. These types of passenger car fasteners are specifically designed for the garage door industry. However, they can also be used in other applications.

4. Fin neck: The fin neck bracket fastener is most commonly made of low carbon steel. These fasteners have round heads and flat bearing surfaces. The bearing surfaces of these bolts are at a 90° angle to the shank. Finn neck bolts are mainly used for thin plywood.
